Diagnostic Imaging Referrals
Physiotherapists and chiropractors with imaging authorization are trained to identify when diagnostic tools like X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRIs are clinically necessary. Their goal is to ensure that any imaging ordered will meaningfully inform your treatment plan and support your recovery.
When Is Imaging Recommended?
Following a detailed assessment, your physiotherapist or chiropractor may recommend diagnostic imaging if it is:
Medically necessary to investigate your injury or condition
Likely to change the course of your treatment
Required to rule out serious pathology or confirm a suspected diagnosis
These referrals are not made routinely. They are used intentionally and only when they offer added value to your care.
Who Can Refer for Imaging?
Only physiotherapists who have completed post-graduate training in diagnostic imaging through the University of Alberta and are registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta are authorized to make referrals for:
X-rays
Ultrasound
MRI
Your care team will let you know if a referral is appropriate and walk you through next steps if imaging is advised.
Care is collaborative here.
